Member Spotlight: Amanda Hyttel

Spotlight member for the month of September

Each month we like to recognize 1 member of either gym who stands out among the rest of the crowd. Each of the members we choose to highlight hold true to Harbor Park’s Core Values, which are: “Happy. Healthy. Community.”

Each one of these values stands for the following:

Healthy: Healthy stands for what we do in the gym. We improve people’s health & wellness and we increase their longevity.

Happy: Happy stands for how we conduct our business. We promote a positive and empowering environment for our members and staff to thrive in.

Community: Community is what we do it for. We are cultivating a community of people dedicated to improving their health and wellness and a community where everyone feels welcome and has a sense of belonging.

Every month, the decision to pick 1 person to highlight is never an easy decision…. Out of all the amazing HPCF members there are always several members who stand out and make our list. But, this month, Amanda Hyttel was high up on our ranking board as she embodies the HPCF values in everything she does.

One thing that stood out to us, was her friendly smile and demeanor towards everyone in the gym. She’s always willing to help others and offer a friendly cheer to keep someone encouraged to keep pushing through.

There are several things you may, or may not know about Amanda. Such as… Did you know she is a competitive curler and an avid Brewers fan?

Read more about Amanda on our blog post and don’t forget to tune in to The Anchored Podcast on September 20th to listen to Amanda’s interview!

Now, let’s learn more about Amanda:

NAME: Amanda Hyttel

Age:34

Hometown: Racine

Occupation: Customer Service Manager

Favorite WOD/Metcon: Anything involving rowing.  Any WOD can be made better with it!

Favorite Lift: Strict Press

Favorite Cheat Meal:No such thing as a cheat meal 🙂 but my favorite unplanned meal would be a hot dog from the ballpark or if I was going to go absolutely nuts, then it’d be cheesecake.

Athletic Background: Golf and Soccer in high school, NCAA Soccer and Thrower

Hobbies/Interests outside of the gym: Curling, golf, biking, attending Brewers games, traveling, going to concerts, spending time with my dog, family and friends

Why did you start?: I needed a change and wanted to do something other than cardio and I wasn’t motivated to lift on my own at the gym

Why do you keep coming back?: I like the variety of  movements in the WODs, the sense of accomplishment I feel after I’m done, the people I’ve met (and continue to meet), and the fun I have during class.

How long have you been a member of Harbor Park CrossFit?: 6 months

How did you find CrossFit?: I remember seeing the CrossFit games on TV in 2018 and thought those people are nuts, what kind of crazy person actually does that!?! Flash forward to 2019 when I was looking for something new to do.  I curl with Liz Urban who I knew did CrossFit so I finally asked her one day what it was all about.  I scheduled my consult, came to foundations, and figured if I was smiling and still wanted to come back for another class then it must not be that bad.

How has CrossFit changed your Life?:I am much more comfortable in my body then I have been since I left college.  Once I graduated, I got a job sitting behind a desk which helped me to develop lazy habits.  Even though I was still somewhat active, I needed to get out of that rut. Now was absolutely the right time for me to find CrossFit.  I’ve got a new perspective on nutrition (thanks Corian) and what I can physically accomplish, and I’m so grateful for that.

What is your biggest achievement so far, and what is your next big goal? I have so many things that I’d say are big achievements so far. I’m running without pain (bye bye shin splints), I see muscle definition, I can do multiple push ups in a row that aren’t on my knees!, I’m doing lifts I’ve never done before, and working my way towards two goals I set in my initial consult, handstands and pull ups.  I’ve got  handstands against the wall but need to get comfortable away from it. Also, I’m still scaling my pull ups but have already increased the difficulty in my scaling and have seen big improvements in my upper body strength.  I continue to chip away at both of those goals so we’ll have to see what will be next after that!

What is your favorite thing about Harbor Park CrossFit?: Do I have to pick just one? The members and coaches are great, the WODs are awesome and challenging, and that combination makes for one amazing atmosphere.

Have any advice for new members?: Don’t be worried if you have the deer in the headlights look when someone is talking about movements in the WOD-  I still get that look too.  If you don’t understand or aren’t sure if you’re doing something right, ask!  The coaches are helpful and want to make sure you’re doing things right.  Once you’ve got the basics down then you can kick some ass!
