Our July Member of the Month Spotlight goes to Marina Awes!
Marina is a member of our Harbor Park CrossFit Kenosha gym (located at 3417 14th Ave Kenosha, Wi 53140)
We as Coaches chose to recognize Marina for all of her hard work and dedication she has shown over the past 6-months. She has not only made fitness a priority in her life, but she has even started to dial in her nutrition as well. With all of this work and dedication she has seen vast improvements physically & mentally.
Marina is also a big advocate on helping everyone in the gym. This type of character trait doesn’t go unnoticed by Coaches. This is one of our biggest member rules we live by, “No member left behind”. Marina is big on helping others, doing extra workouts and even joining the run crew on their weekly runs!
Here’s some information on Marina you may, or may not have known!
NAME: Marina Awes
Hometown: Madison, WI
Occupation: Special Accounts Representative at Uline
Favorite WOD/Metcon: anything with running and burpees! Cardio is my JAM!
Favorite Lift: Do thrusters count as lifts? Because I love those lol.
Favorite Cheat Meal: The combination of ice cream, Oreos, peanut butter, drowned in chocolate sauce. I love sweets. Pizza is always terribly good too.
Athletic Background: When I was younger I did Karate and received my black belt at the age of 10. I played a little tennis in high school.
Hobbies/Interests outside of the gym: I love to sing, read, travel, cook, and hang out with my dog Mowgli!
How long have you been CrossFitting?: I’ve been doing CrossFit for 6 months now and it’s safe to say I am addicted.
How long have you be a Harbor Park CrossFit Member? 6 months!
How did you find CrossFit?: About a year and a had ago I made a huge lifestyle change and started exercising and eating better. I was starting to get bored with my work outs and they were starting to feel like a chore. I did some research and thought CrossFit sounded like a great way to mix things up and take my fitness to the next level!
How has CrossFit changed your Life?: CrossFit is just as much a mental sport, as it is physical, if not more. CrossFit has helped me take control of my life. I wake up with purpose and determination. It’s taught me that I have complete control over my attitude and how I react to things.
What is your biggest achievement so far, and what is your next big goal?:
Over the last year and a half I’ve lost about 60lbs and I am really proud of that. I have completely turned my lifestyle around. I used to put crap in my body. My goal is to appreciate my body for what it is no matter the stage of my journey. I think we get so caught up in getting to the finish line that we forget to enjoy the race!
What is your favorite thing about Harbor Park CrossFit?:
It’s so hard to just pick one!! I think my favorite part is watching people put themselves outside of their comfort zones whether it’s hitting PRs or doing movements for the first time. There is sheer joy and excitement on their faces and that’s pretty special.
Have any advice for new members?:
Leave your ego at the door applies to EVERYONE. If you aren’t an expert at a particular movement, you are not going master it by putting yourself down. Rome wasn’t built in a day! Don’t try to be better than anyone other than the person you were yesterday. Set realistic goals for yourself, work hard, and be consistent. But most importantly, have fun. 🙂
